I slump through the front door of my house at two in the morning. I spent all that time only accomplishing nothing. Rounds of phone calls with companies and charitable donors with no results, leaving me back at square one.

Exhaustion, defeat, and frustration overwhelm me as I start the trek to my bedroom. I’m hungry but too tired to eat. I’m sleepy but too anxious to sleep.

Walking into my bedroom, I do a quick scan for Ivory. As expected, she’s nestled under my blankets, fast asleep. I kick off my shoes and change into my pajamas quietly, not to wake her.

Tiptoeing to the door that leads to the one place in the whole house that the staff isn’t allowed. A private living room attached to my bedroom. A place where I can be messy, unorganized, and not worry about anything else.

My sanctuary.

As I crack the door on the room, I imagine myself sprawling out on the couch as I flip through hundreds of channels of mindless TV. Right now, this sounds like heaven.

But as I glance around the room, something’s off. At first thought, I assume maybe one of the new house cleaners made a mistake. But I’m wrong.

The temperature is warmer than usual and the messy room is now clean. The TV’s on and displaying one of my favorite romantic comedies. A small fire flickers in the fireplace I never use. Fresh popcorn sits in a bowl on the end table beside the couch with a note attached to it.

“Thought you could use something relaxing to come home to. Enjoy! Sincerely, Your Hubby.”

I place my hand over my heart and smile. This is all so sweet. Gunner is the best fake husband a woman like me could’ve asked for.

Feeling a sudden burst of energy, I get ready to sink into the warm blankets on the couch. But a message at the bottom of the note catches my eye.

“P.S. And for tomorrow, look under the TV.”

I glance over to see a wire basket filled to the top with my favorite Friday routines. New extra-soft blankets, unpopped bags of popcorn, DVDs of the entire season of my favorite TV show, gossip magazines, and a single rose lies on top.

Tears well up in my eyes and my heart soars high. Gunner always knows just what to do to make me feel happy. He builds me up and supports me. I can be myself around him. He’s not afraid to bring me back to earth when I lose my head in the clouds.

I’ve never been truly in love before, I’m starting to wonder if this is what it feels like. If this is love, why did I spend so many years fighting it? Is falling in love really that bad?

As I hold the basket in my hands, I’ve never felt happier. It’s all so simple, yet, I’d pay good money to come home to something like this every day.

Wait a minute.

An idea to fix my problems at work, sparks in my mind. I don’t need those companies to donate auction items.
